Electromagnetic heating (IH) technology is widely used in household appliances and industrial equipment, including induction cookers, IH rice cookers, induction water heaters, sealing machines, and industrial melting furnaces. These devices convert AC mains or DC power into high-frequency AC (1 kHz -- 1 MHz) through half‑bridge or full‑bridge inverter circuits. The high-frequency current generates an alternating magnetic field, which induces eddy currents in metal objects, producing heat.

Film capacitors play a critical role in IH circuits, serving three primary functions:

1. Input EMC Filtering (C1/C2)

Together with common‑mode chokes, film capacitors form Pi‑type filters at the AC input. They suppress electromagnetic interference generated by IGBT high‑speed switching and protect the equipment from external grid disturbances. C1 typically uses MKP‑X2 type capacitors (3 µF -- 10 µF, 275 VAC -- 300 VAC, Y‑connection), while C2 employs MKP metalized film capacitors (3 µF -- 10 µF, 450 VAC -- 500 VAC, delta connection).

2. DC‑Link (C3)

After three‑phase bridge rectification, C3 works with an inductor to smooth pulsating DC into stable DC for the inverter stage. Its primary role is DC‑Link support --- absorbing ripple currents and harmonic voltages generated by IGBT switching, preventing self‑oscillation in the DC bus that could damage IGBTs and shorten equipment lifespan.

3. High‑Frequency Resonant Circuit

The resonant capacitor (typically 0.1 µF -- 0.8 µF, rated up to 1600 V DC) forms a tank circuit with the induction coil, establishing a high-frequency oscillating magnetic field that generates heat in the metal workpiece. Induction cookers typically operate at 20 kHz -- 40 kHz, creating high dv/dt and large pulsating currents through the resonant capacitor.

Why Film Capacitors?

Metalized polypropylene film capacitors are preferred for IH applications due to:

● Low high‑frequency loss -- Low dissipation factor ensures minimal internal heating.
● Low ESR and ESL -- Critical for carrying high ripple currents while minimizing heat generation. Advanced MKP capacitors can achieve ESR below 15 mΩ, significantly reducing temperature rise risk.
● High dv/dt withstand capability -- Essential for resonant circuits subject to rapid voltage changes.
● Excellent self‑healing property -- Localized dielectric breakdown clears without catastrophic failure, ensuring long service life.
● Non‑polarized design -- Simplifies circuit layout and accommodates reverse voltage without damage.
● Compact size with high power density -- Enables slim, integrated designs for modern IH appliances.

Film capacitors are indispensable components in electromagnetic heating equipment, enabling reliable high-frequency operation, efficient energy conversion, and long service life. For OEMs and power supply manufacturers, selecting film capacitors with appropriate specifications --- including voltage rating, dv/dt capability, ESR, and thermal performance --- is essential to ensure product reliability and market competitiveness.
