What Are the Advantages of Film Capacitors?

Most film capacitors used for DC‑link in new energy vehicles employ high‑temperature polypropylene film as the dielectric. So, what advantages do film capacitors offer?

1. Excellent safety performance -- High overvoltage withstand capability, good temperature characteristics, and an operating temperature range from -40 °C to +105 °C.

2. Stable frequency characteristics -- Good high‑frequency performance, non‑polarized, capable of withstanding reverse voltage, low ESL, and long service life.

3. High rated voltage -- No need for series connection or balancing resistors. Low ESR, strong ripple current withstand capability, and excellent surge current immunity.

The electrodes of a film capacitor are nanoscale metal layers vapor‑deposited onto the film. The component is non‑polarized, making it very convenient for users -- there is no need to worry about positive or negative terminal orientation. In contrast, when a reverse voltage exceeding 1.5 times the rated voltage (Un) is applied to an electrolytic capacitor, internal chemical reactions occur. If such reverse voltage persists long enough, the electrolyte may leak out as internal pressure builds up.

Thanks to the aging‑resistant nature of the dielectric film, film capacitors enjoy a very long lifespan. Specifically, under rated voltage and rated operating temperature, the service life exceeds 15,000 hours. Based on an average vehicle speed of 30 km/h, this translates to 450,000 km over the capacitor's lifetime -- more than sufficient for the driving mileage of an electric vehicle.
